Snohomish County’s largest city and seat of county government, Everett, sits on the shores of Port Gardner Bay, gazing across Puget Sound at the majestic Olympic Mountain range. It was once called the “City of Smokestacks” as it has a long association with industry and labor. It’s now an All American City (2002), but its first beginnings were less auspicious. Henry Hewitt, a Tacoma lumberman, convinced John D. Rockefeller and other Eastern developers to finance a “New York City” of the West. Plated in 1891, incorporated in 1893 and named after the son of one of the early investors, the city of Everett was born.
