Home to some 300 wineries and vineyards, Washington is now the number-two premium wine-producing state in the country. Even so, success hasn’t spoiled Washington State wine country. It’s still a place where you can take a wine tour off the beaten path and get away from the wine tour rush hour you’ll find in places like… Well, it’s not polite to name names. So let’s just say Washington wine country is still a place where you can meet the vintner. It’s the kind of place that makes wine lovers want to sip and savor, not gulp and go. Excellent reds and whites can be found at wineries on both sides of the Cascade Range and are reason enough to add a winery tour to your itinerary. The stunning scenery that characterizes Washington’s vineyards is an added incentive. Cheers, indeed.

Vashon Island
Andrew Will 12526 SW Bank Rd. Vashon, WA 98070 (206) 463-9227
Andrew Will Winery was started in 1989 and is owned by Chris Camarda. The winery was launched out of a love for wine that Chris had developed while working in the restaurant trade for almost 20 years. Named after the Camardas’ son Will and nephew Andrew, Andrew Will has been a major contributor to the success and notoriety in recent years of Washington State wines.
Andrew Will makes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. As Chris Camarda has developed his style of winemaking over the years, he has focused on the primacy of the vineyard over variety. It is now the driving force behind Andrew Will. While the idea of terroir has become almost a hollow marketing tool, it has great attraction for Chris in its purest form. "I believe that an individual piece of property can form a signature - an identity - and it is that face that is the focus of my winemaking, " he said. "We are trying to let the vineyards reveal themselves. I believe that if Washington is ever to be considered a great wine region we need to establish the characteristics of our geographical areas and the characteristics of each vineyard in those areas," he added.
Vashon Winery 10317 SW 156th St Vashon, WA 98070 (206) 567-0055
Vashon Winery is set in the middle of an old apple orchard down a lovely country lane just a couple of minutes driving north of the town of Vashon.
Vashon Winery is over twenty years old and continues to make wonderful Bordeaux-type wines utilizing grapes from eastern Washington; including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in red wine. In white wine, Semillon is barrel-fermented and barrel-aged. It is dry and rich.
Additionally Vashon Winery makes wine from locally grown grapes including Pinot Noir and Chasselas Dore.
Vashon Winery uses extended maceration as a technique to create an elegant character to its red wines and searches for grapes that produce lower alcohol wines, and finally ages the wine in older oak barrels, using the oak for effect rather than direct flavor.
In the fall, look for Irvine's Vintage Cider, an English-styled cider using primarily European cider apples. You can taste autumn and the color reminds of a late summer sunset.
Vashon Winery is open on Saturdays only, from April Fool’s Day to October 1, 2pm to 5pm. All of the wines are opened for tasting on that day. The winery is also open by appointment but there may not be any wines open to sample. Additionally, the winery puts on concerts during the summer.

Swede Hill Cellars 5603 Bayview Road Bay 2 Langley, WA 98260 (206) 227-7533 At Swede Hill Cellars, we handcraft small lots of artisan wines that reflect our relationship with: our growers whose skill and integrity produce the beautiful grapes that reflect Washington State's unique glacial and volcanic geology, and our friends and family who work with us during long daytime hours and into the night during Crush, to ready those grapes for transformation by the winemakers. Because we work in small lots we can use traditional French and artisan techniques: cold soaks, co-fermentation at crush, hand punch downs, stem Inclusion, sur lie aging & battonage, minimal filtration or fining, and carefully balanced oak exposure. We handle our wines very lightly during barrel aging, striving to minimize pumping. The winemakers favor low oxygen exposure during barrel aging to help preserve the wines' intense fruit flavors and aromas. Our Swedish Arts and Crafts inspired winery is designed to optimize its solar exposure with an insulated, passive-solar heated fermentation room. And our cellar employs super-insulation and earth cooling to minimize its energy use. Along similar lines, we are using lighter weight glass for many of our releases, saving resources and energy. Hours: Fri Noon-5pm, Sat 11am-6pm, Sun Noon-5pm, Mon Noon-5pm.
Woodinville (click here for a pdf map of Woodinville Wineries)
Adytum Cellars 15114 148th Ave NE Woodinville, WA 98072 (425) 482-9030
MEAD is an alcoholic beverage produced by the fermentation of a mixture of honey and water. With fruit and spices added as flavorings it is called by different names: melomel, metheglin, pyment, cyser and others. It is typically clear with a slight gold tint and an alcohol content of between 7-22%. A wide variety of types can be produced ranging from a very dry and light mead similar to more traditional grape wines; a sweet and heavy-bodied type; and, a sparkling mead resembling a sparkling white wine.
HONEY is the prime ingredient that sets mead apart from other fermented beverages. While wine is fermented from fructose, and beer is fermented from maltose, honey contains a variety of sugars that give it a complexity unsurpassed. The actual composition of honey varies based on the floral source, and thus, each honey is a signature of the region from which it originates and the quality of the flowers and produce.

The word Gård, meaning farm or estate, honors the Scandinavian heritage of our family. The Lawrence family has been farming the Royal Slope, near Royal City, Wash., in Washington's Columbia Valley for over 40 years.

Hestia Cellars 18572 142nd AVE NE Woodinville, WA 98072 (425) 333-4270 What started as a journey to learn more about our ancestry turned into a calling. As longtime food and wine enthusiasts, we were inspired during a visit to Greece and Italy to create Hestia Cellars, where we produce handcrafted wines that bring old world culture to new world families. Our Great Grandparents lived in the small hillside villages of Trikala, Greece and Mattie, Italy. When we traveled to Europe and visited these villages, we experienced a way of life that was distinctly different than ours in Seattle. There we discovered an old world culture where life revolves around food, wine, family, and friends and we wanted to bring that way of life home with us to share with others. We imagined a small, boutique winery where intimate, hands-on production would create quality wines to be enjoyed in the company of friends.
Hestia Cellars will be open every Saturday 11am - 4pm beginning January 24, 2009.
